‘ . . . The initial idea of investigating a portrait of this kind (the student’s own idea, I should add) is a good one, given the complexity of the imagery and the picture’s historical context.

The writer has tracked down and studied the relevant secondary literature in a very thorough fashion, and has contributed her own independent observations on the primary material published in those studies, making new connections between various parts of that material.

She has also consulted experts who may not have published, and showed enterprise in tracking them down.  . . . The presentation is virtually impeccable; and the illustrations are very intelligently chosen, to contribute effectively and indispensably to the argument.  . . . I would judge this dissertation clearly worthy of a Distinction.'
