Rarely does the editor have the inclination to read any book twice but this book has been the exception. A copy was purchased at Gatwick Airport and the reader was disappointed flights were not delayed. For anyone interested in the life of Shakespeare this is a 5-star must-read.

Bill Bryson's biography of William Shakespeare's life sets out the documented facts and they are very few. Anything else he dismisses in an accomplished but entertaining manner as myth, legend and academic speculation masquerading as fact.

The book is slim as a result, but an absorbing gem for all that. To quote Tom Payne quoting Jorge Luis Borges — God in conversation with Shakespeare said, ' Neither am I anyone; I have dreamt the world as you have dreamt the work, and among the forms in my dream are you, who, like myself, are many and no one.'
